SINGAPORE: A 19—year—old has been charged for causing death by a negligent act in which a military Land Rover rolled backwards and killed full—time National Serviceman Second Lieutenant (2LT) Nicholas Chan Wei Kit.

Muhammad Abdul Qaiyuum Bin Muhammed Iskander is alleged to have engaged the reverse gear and stepped on the accelerator, causing the vehicle to surge backwards and roll over 2LT Chan on July 3 last year.

2LT Chan, a Motor Transport Officer, was taking delivery of the SAF land rover in Seletar Camp when the incident happened. A recovery vehicle, activated half an hour later, managed to lift the Land Rover.

A medical team from Seletar Medical Centre tried to resuscitate 2LT Chan. The 21—year—old was sent to Changi General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Muhammad Abdul Qaiyuum was in court with his family and his lawyer, Mr A R Marican, for yesterday’s pre—trial conference. Mr Marican told reporters he would make representations to the Attorney—General Chambers. The next pre—trial conference is scheduled on February 8.
