More to get public assistance

FROM July, Public Assistance (PA) criteria will be made more flexible, benefiting a larger pool of people.

Needy Singaporeans whose Central Provident Fund (CPF) payouts under the Minimum Sum Scheme or CPF Life fall below the current PA allowance rate of $360 will be one group to benefit.

Currently, due to the fact that they receive CPF payouts, they do not qualify for PA - even if they meet the other criteria, such as not being able to work, having no assets and little or no family support. But from July, they will receive cash top-ups in addition to their CPF payouts, so they will not be worse off than PA recipients.

The number of people on PA was 2,920 as of the end of last year. Of these, 94 per cent were individual recipients.

There are also families on the PA scheme. A family of two adults and two children can get up to $1,210 a month.

The amount of cash top-ups will differ from case to case, depending, in part, on the amount of their CPF payouts.
